A project with focus on people with dementia and their relatives, using participatory design methods.
This project is a further development of a previous project, where there was a similar goal, but where the users were not included in the design process. Like the previous project, this project is based on Markussen & Knutz (2017) description of Social Design and the underlying concept Social Games. A Social Game is a game, where focus is on social relations and how you can work with these via games or activities.
The purpose of this project was to study how the inclusion of Participatory design and prototype testing play a role in the making of a Social Game.Like the previous project, the users in this project are people with dementia and their relatives.
The problem statement for this project was: What aspects are relevant to include in the making of a relationship tool for citizens with dementia and their relatives, and what opportunities and limitations are there when including prototypes in the design process?
- Study the daily lives of people with dementia and their relatives, to establish their needs and goals.
- Creating a prototype for testing with the users.
- 2D Mapping & 2D collages
- Prototype testing
- 3D Mockups
- User Interviews & Observations
Based on the data from user interviews and observations, 2D mapping and collages were created, to explore ideas for the game:
After this, 3D mockups were made, to make the ideas tangible, and to help make a decision on which prototype to proceed with:
Having decided on the final prototype, this was built and tested with the users:
Core user needs
The analysis of the data collected in the user interviews and observations made the following clear about the user needs:
- The users need a high level of structure.
- The users struggle with their memory and concentration.
- Positive experiences, which has previously been successful with the users include physical activity, community activity, laughter, competition, excitement, dancing, memories and imagination.
In this project, a Social game was made, focusing on Participatory design to ensure that the reality of the users was the basis for the prototype. The data collection gave insight in the needs and goals of the users, and these were included from the very beginning of the idea generation. To ensure the optimal design process, frameworks for Participatory design was used throughout the process.
This project clarified, that integrating prototype testing in a project makes it possible for designers, clients or users to get a subjective experience with the result of the design process.
