Interaction design project focusing on language culture with KIF handball.
In Southern University of Denmark, I was a part of a project in the Institute of Design and Communication called Language learning in the wild. This project is meant to develop support structures for foreigners at their place of employment, in their spare time, in public institutions and in civil society.
The purpose of the project is to develop functional learning tools and to better understand how usage-based language learning works. In my specific part of the project, focus was on what is being done for non-Danish-speaking players in Danish sports clubs, in order to be able to develop tools for a language policy. Handball club KIF participated in this project, with interviews with players, coaches and other members of the administration, and allowing us observe different daily activities in the club, such as the training and the matches.
The design challenge for this project was: How can interaction and experience design support professional foreign athlete’s Danish language acquisition?
- Study the daily lives of non-Danish-speaking players in KIF handball club.
- Study the culture and guidelines within KIF handball club for new and existing players.
- IDEO method cards
- Design workshop
- User Interviews & Observations
- Figurines stakeholder analysis
This project was started by exploring methods for the project, using IDEO’s method cards. IDEO Method Cards is a tool to showcase methods to inspire great design and keep people at the center of the design process. Each of the 51 cards describes one method and includes a brief story about how and when to use it. The cards were used to create a method map.
Figurines were then used to examine the different user relations, to be able to establish which users to include in the user interview and observations.
Core user needs and findings
The process came down to an understanding of the language culture in KIF Handball, where the end product is a way of communicating the issues throughout highlighted graphics. The tools can be implemented in many different ways, the important factor is that the language barriers become clear to staff and players on a day to day basis.
The complete process of the projects was presented in the academic poster shown in the top of this page.
