Using quantitative and qualitative methods to examine interactions on social media.
Waves of digital innovation has had great influence on society’s news habits. The user can now choose between countless different media and are no longer dependent on established news media. All these opportunities have also given pathway for spreading fake information and news.
Since 2009 personalization of what the users see, when they are on different digital media, has spread to most online media, such as Facebook. Algorithms now decide what the user see or does not see, from the user’s online history.
In 2011 Eli Pariser, an internet activist, described the consequences of the personalization of our online experiences with the concept of Filter Bubbles. He describes Filter Bubbles as something we are in when we are online, and only see the things we are interested in and agree with, and contradictions to our opinions or different perspectives than our own are hidden. The consequences of this are both personal and cultural and, in the end, have impact on our society. In this project the media 24Nyt was used as case to examine Filter Bubbles on social media. 24Nyt is a media who describes themselves as being a news media who brings news which mainstream media either down prioritize or not give any priority.
The problem statement for this project was: How can the Facebook page of 24Nyt and their presentation of news be defined as being fake news, and what possibilities and issues does Filter Bubbles and 24Nyt create for the users?
- Study the interactions and postings on the Facebook site of 24Nyt and discuss the findings with theory of fake news and Filter Bubbles.
- Study the users of 24Nyt, their use of the site and news habits, and how they found the site in the first place.
- Filter Bubble Theory
- Survey & Observations
An analysis of different news articles was made, and these were compared to articles with the same subject from other established news media sites. Observations on the interactions on the Facebook page was made, and a survey with a number of users was done, focusing on their news habits and their use of the site. The results were show in the academic poster above.
In this project the concept of Filter Bubbles and fake news has been studied through the case of the Facebook page of the news media site 24Nyt.
This project show, that 24Nyt can be described as a fake news media, as the analysis show deficiencies in their news articles, compared to the articles from other news media. The case work in this project has shown me, that we as a society need to see things that are outside our personal interest, and that it is in the conflicting views we can find self-reflection, new knowledge and where it is possible to find a real picture of how there is room for differences.
